Issue
Grocery shoppers often spend money on food that ends up going bad before they get a chance to eat it. My team was challenged to design an application to help prevent grocery shoppers from buying food they won’t end up eating before it expires, thus saving them money and reducing food waste.
Process
My group explored various solutions to the challenge through brainstorming and collaborative design. Using an iterative process, we created the prototype for an app called Spoiled Milk. Spoiled Milk provides users with a way to track their grocery expenses, keep a current inventory of their food stock, and view when these items expire. We built an interactive prototype in Axure and used it to perform usability testing with 9 participants.
Outcome
From the testing, we found that many users thought function of the application would help them with spoilage of food and managing their grocery expenses. Most users found the inventory section to be helpful with creating new grocery lists. However, participants also expressed issues with readability and discoverability due to UI elements being too small in the inital prototype. Our team revised the prototype according to these insights we gained through research. You may view all platforms of the final version of Spoiled Milk here.
