Issue
Many people wish to learn more about makeup and proper makeup application. However, the makeup tutorials and articles available are widely dispersed. This causes users to visit multiple sites to gain knowledge of makeup basics. If users wish to refresh their memory about a certain aspect of makeup, they must recall the exact location for that specific topic, which can lead to user frustration.
Process
Because all of this information is spread out, we decided that it would be great to create a tutorial that houses all the basics of makeup in one location. In order to determine which basics to cover, my partner and I researched and analyzed other makeup tutorials along with articles, and videos. That, as well as my pre-existing makeup knowledge, helped us pinpoint the most important areas that our tutorial should focus on.
While analyzing other tutorials, we realized that most had very little interactivity. In order to keep our users attention and help them gain a deeper understanding of the subject matter, we created our tutorial through Axure to provide users with a highly interactive experience. This was done throughout the tutorial. For example on the brush page, when users roll over a particular brush, they see a description that includes the brushes name and description of use. We also adhered to many e-learning principles (such as coherence, personalization, contiguity, etc.). This helped to further streamline our tutorial and provide users with a productive learning experience.
A total of 17 users were recruited to participate in our tutorial. As stated previously, a pre and post test was created to gauge how much our users learned through our system.
Outcome
Through our pre and post test, we found that users learned a significant amount from our tutorial. User scored an average of 59.87% on the pre test. The post test average was 73.50%; more than a 10% increase. However it is worth noting that four users (who averaged a post test score of 62.63%) had technical difficulties and were unable to complete the pre test. Therefore, we believe our pre test average is much lower than stated. It is worth knowing that our tutorial has an effect size of 0.83. This score shows that our tutorial has a major impact on test scores and learners.
Through this test, we realized a few areas of improvement. One would be to incorporate audio narration in place of text. We believe this would increase learners comprehension of the material. Another solution is to modify the test questions. We heard from a few participants that the questions were pretty difficult, even though the system is meant for novices. Therefore, we would reevaluate and change the pre and post test questions. If you would like to see the tutorial, please click here.
